What is Occupational Therapy?2026-03-02T15:05:06-05:00

Occupational therapy (OT) is a type of health care that helps to address challenges that are interfering with a child’s ability to do the things in their life that are most important to them! This may include everyday activities such as:

  • Self-Care: Getting dressed, eating, toileting
  • Being Productive: Going to school or work, participating in the community
  • Leisure Activities: Play, making friends, sports and recreation

OT uses a strength-based approach to determine a child’s current skillset and then help to teach skills, modify tasks, and create a supportive environment so that children can have success with their most meaningful activities.

At Pathways to Hope, we have a Registered Occupational Therapist providing:

Occupational Therapy Assessments which include a 1:1 direct assessment, caregiver interview and written summary report. Occupational Therapy Treatment Includes 1:1 direct treatment and caregiver education.

Parent consultation programs – this includes a comprehensive assessment of the concerns and a plan to teach and empower the caregivers to implement techniques at home.

Our OT prioritizes a strengths-based, play-based and family-centered approach to care. Sessions are individually designed with your child’s skills and interests in mind. Our hope is that sessions will be fun, empowering, and informative. We emphasize parent involvement and education so that caregivers feel empowered to support their child with ongoing skill development outside of OT sessions.

We also have an OTA on our team who loves supporting children as they learn new skills and build confidence through everyday activities and play. She brings a caring and encouraging approach to every session and enjoys helping kids feel successful while having fun along the way.

Occupational therapy will be tailored to your child’s specific needs for example your child could learn new feeding and eating skills, how to manage sensitivity to different sensory input to increase their comfort in everyday environments and activities.

Develop their fine and gross motor skills to support participation in important daily activities and play!

Learn strategies to help manage big emotions and develop calming routines.

Gain independence in tasks like brushing teeth, tying shoes, and managing daily routines. This may involve:

  • Determining what part of the task or routine is most difficult
  • Recommending modifications to the task or the environment that the task is being completed in
  • Share tools and resources that might help with following routines (e.g., visual schedules, checklists, etc)
How does virtual Occupational Therapy work?2026-03-02T15:58:38-05:00

Virtual sessions offer a flexible and convenient approach to OT from the comfort of your own home. This approach is more parent centered and can allow you to feel impowered to learn strategies and implement them at home – where they spending a lot of their time.

This makes the approach more family centred and even more applicable to your day-to-day life and routines. The Occupational Therapist can work on goals that are little more difficult to do in centre, like bathing, brushing teeth and dressing, all activities that happen within the home. As these routines are happening there is an opportunity for the OT to observe and provide strategies to make these activities go more smoothly. Providing meaningful, in the moment feedback and guidance to help you along the way.
